Pleural taping, commonly called thoracentesis, is a medical procedure that eliminates fluid between the chest wall and lungs. It may be needed to establish the cause of pleural effusion (an excess of fluid in the pleural space) or relieve its associated symptoms. Pleural taping (thoracentesis) is a very important procedure that helps in both diagnosing and relieving symptoms of pleural effusion. It is usually safe and effective when performed by qualified medical practitioners, thereby improving patient care.
PURPOSE
01.
Diagnostic
Assessing fluid analysis to determine the cause of pleural effusion, such as infection, heart failure, malignancy, etc.
02.
Therapeutic
Some people with large amounts of fluid in their Pleura may experience breathlessness and pain in the chest.
PROCEDURE
- The patient is usually placed sitting up with arms on a table to widen intercostal spaces.
- The spot where the needle will go in is numbed using local anesthesia.
- Ultrasound can be used when locating fluids, thereby preventing lung injury or injuries to other structures.
- A sterile needle or catheter is passed cautiously through the chest wall into the pleural space.
- Syringe aspirating fluid from this place after introducing a needle into it or allowing water to drain into a collection bottle/bag.
- The material obtained can then undergo different tests such as chemical analysis, cell counts, microbiological cultures and cytology examination.
- Following adequate removal of fluid through the puncture site, a needle or catheter is removed.
- A sterile dressing covers the site.
- The patient may be observed for some time after completion to monitor for any complications.
POST-PROCEDURE CARE
Monitoring
Patients are watched out for pneumothorax, infection, and other complications that may arise.
Imaging
Chest X-rays are sometimes performed to check for pneumothorax or to assess the progress of fluid removal.
Follow-Up
Further medical treatments or diagnostic investigations based on analysis of the pleural fluid.
